This is a great activity for motivating the brain. I tried it with my 93-year-old mom. She struggled at the beginning. We started working together with the first couple of letters. Once she got the hang of it, she did three more letters on her own. I told her how proud I was of her accomplishment and she responded with a beautiful smile of satisfaction!! This was a very rewarding experience, and we will continue working on some other pictures to keep her mind sharp!! I highly recommend this book!!

We bought this as part of our homeschool curriculum, to be used withLearning Resources Tangrams Smart Pack. My son was able to flip through the book, search for the puzzle he wanted to create, and was able to do most of the puzzles with minimal assistance. The book did need to be propped open, but it is the perfect size to place in a gallon ziplock bag with the Tangrams and taken on trips.This book is probably the most appropriate for children over the age of eight, with a few exceptions for younger ages if you have a child who is a quick study (this requires an honest look at your child's capabilities). I would not try this on a child younger than the age of eight. However, if you do find it is too overwhelming, you merely need to save it for a few years and he/she will then be ready.Great for critical thinking, understanding spatial concepts, fine motor development, and basic geometry.

Too complex for my little preschooler...I was misinformed as I thought that the book was, not only bigger, but full of a pattern per page, instead it is full of teeny black photos, many to a single page. I bought this for my 4 year old...it doesn't make a lick of sense to her. I would not suggest this for little ones, but it is probably perfect for older kids who are interested.

My middle school students love working on tangram puzzles. They make a nice activity to complement instruction about transformations, symmetry, and geometry. It helps to introduce and reinforce instruction about fractions. The students love to "race" each other the complete the puzzles. Usually, they struggle with the tangrams at first, claiming that there's no way to solve the puzzle. The students learn to be persistent, patient, and to think about what they are doing. I love when they struggle, get frustrated, then have a gigantic "ah-ha" moment. They feel very good about themselves, and I love that they recognize that they didn't give up just because it was difficult. The ELA/LIT teacher has incorporated the shapes and stories the students create into her instruction as well, making this a fun way to integrate instruction across content areas. We try to keep the integration light and fun. I use the history of tangrams to show the students what children 2000 years ago did to entertain themselves without video games!

It provides many challenging puzzles. I think we might only be on page two! The puzzle I purchased didn't have a useful set of puzzles to try to solve, so this book "saves the day>"

I was hoping for something big enough that he could put the shapes on it as an outline, and this is not sized right for that. But my kindergartner does enjoy occupying his time making the shapes from the book.

There are lots of tangrams to use in this book, but I was a little disappointed in the activities (i.e., none to copy and let my children re-create at different learning levels).

This is not a puzzle book young ones will use on their own... there are a LOT of puzzles, but all in B&W and odd shapes I do t necessarily have with a normal package of tangram pieces.

About the Author

Annett Schirmer completed an undergraduate degree in psychology in 1999 at Leipzig University, Germany’s second-oldest university and where psychology was first established as an academic discipline. She obtained her doctorate in life sciences from Leipzig University in 2002 for research she completed at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences. Dr. Schirmer’s subsequent professional career took her to the United States and later to Singapore, where she is now an associate professor of psychology at the National University of Singapore (NUS). At NUS, she directs an active lab in which undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students conduct research in the area of affective and social neuroscience. More specifically, Dr. Schirmer and her students address questions about the mental and neural underpinnings of emotional communication. Dr. Schirmer teaches a wide range of topics including emotions, cognition, communication, and neuroscience. She has won teaching awards for both undergraduate and graduate teaching.

The event (and hence Anthroposophy itself) was placed under the sign of Christian Rosenkreutz and the cultural impulse of Rosicrucianism, which, since its initial appearance in the early seventeenth century, had gone underground to be transmitted through the centuries by small, more-or-less hidden esoteric groups. In the Congress, however, the original aim of the movement―a “general reform” of human society through the unity of art, science, and religion―was proclaimed anew and with the firm intent to put it into practice.

This volume thus marks not only the birth of Anthroposophy as a spiritual movement of cultural renewal―from which would flow new initiatives in art, science, religion, education, agriculture, medicine, architecture, and drama―but also the articulation of this activity as the evolutionary tip of human consciousness reaching back to the primordial mystery centers.

Collected here, with Steiner’s lectures and descriptions, are essays and reports on the Theosophical Congress of Whitsun 1907, as well as documents relating to some of the direct consequences of the Congress, especially those leading to the design and construction of the first Goetheanum. About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. Joan deRis Allen was born January 20, 1931. She graduated from Columbia University School of Architecture in 1956 and practiced as an independent architect in the United States until 1968. At that time, together with her husband Paul Marshall Allen and two young children, she emigrated to England. In 1970, she founded Camphill Architects at Botton Village, Yorkshire, with Gabor Talló. Over the years her architectural work has taken her to Ireland, Scotland, and Norway. Joan now lives and works in Kimberton Hills, Pennsylvania. In 1970, she published Living Buildings, Halls and Chapels of the Camphill Movement for the fiftieth anniversary of the Camphill Move¬ment. She is author with Paul Marshall Allen of The Time Is at Hand!; Francis of Assisi, Canticle of the Creatures; and Fingal’s Cave, the Poems of Ossian and Celtic Christianity.

Christopher Bamford is Editor in Chief for SteinerBooks and its imprints. A Fellow of the Lindisfarne Association, he has lectured, taught, and written widely on Western spiritual and esoteric traditions. He is the author of The Voice of the Eagle: The Heart of Celtic Christianity (1990) and An Endless Trace: The Passionate Pursuit of Wisdom in the West (2003). He has also translated and edited numerous books, including Celtic Christianity: Ecology and Holiness (1982); Homage to Pythagoras: Rediscovering Sacred Science; and The Noble Traveller: The Life and Writings of O. V. de L. Milosz (all published by Lindisfarne Books). HarperSanFrancisco included an essay by Mr. Bamford in its anthology Best Spiritual Writing 2000.
