A fun, contemporary, lesbian heir to Alex Sanchez's "Rainbow Boys" trilogy (S. & S.), this series seems to be a wonderful and relatively light realistic look at the specific trials of being a teenaged girl who likes girls. Hesik does a good job of filling new readers in on the relationships and plot points established in Freshman Year (Bold Strokes, 2012) without bogging down the opening chapters. Although some of the references are dated (The Butchies; Late Night with Dr. Drew; Buffy the Vampire Slayer), that doesn't deter from the book's quality. There is also a very well-handled relationship between a Deaf character and the hearing protagonist. Although the speed with which Abbey becomes comfortable signing is surprising, the interactions ring true to the way that Deaf and hearing individuals and culture rub up against each other. The characters are delightfully affectionate and frank, and go through the tensions and changes typical of teen girl friendships in a realistic way. About the Author
CECIL D. MERCER is a distinguished professor of education at the University of Florida. He received his Ed.D. in special education from the University of Virginia in 1974. Cecil has written numerous articles and books on educating exceptional students. One of his major works is "Students with Learning Disabilities," and he is co-author of the "Strategic Math Series" and the "Great Leaps Reading Program." Cecil remains involved in the educational programs of exceptional students through his participation in in-service and classroom activities in public and private schools, and he is a featured keynote and workshop speaker at many national conferences. Cecil is a member of the International Dyslexia Association Board of Directors and has served on the Learning Disabilities Association of America Professional Advisory Board. He has been awarded the College of Education Teacher of the Year award three times at the University of Florida.

ANN R. MERCER is an educational diagnostician in Gainesville, Florida, and a former special education teacher of students with emotional disabilities and students with learning problems at both the elementary and secondary levels. Ann is co-author of "Self-Correcting Learning Materials for the Classroom" in additional to several articles and book chapters in the field of special education. About the Author: Rex Pickett is the critically-acclaimed author of the novel "Sideways," upon which the multiply award-winning Alexander Payne movie of the same title was adapted.  The film, now an unqualified cult classic, won over 350 awards after its release in 2004, including the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

 

A sequel to "Sideways" tilted "Vertical" (2011) won the Gold Medal for Fiction from the Independent Publisher Book Awards.

 

In 2012 Rex successfully adapted his novel "Sideways" into a hit play that ran for 6 months at the Equity-waiver Ruskin Group Theater.  In the summer of 2013 it opened at La Jolla Playhouse's 400-seat Potiker Theater under the direction of Des McAnuff ("Jersey Boys") and shattered all attendance records for a non-musical in La Jolla Playhouse's august 30-year history.  "Sideways" the play now heads to London and beyond.

 

In 2000, Rex's ex-wife Barbara Schock won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short.  The 33-min. film, titled "My Mother Dreams the Satan's Disciples in New York," is an original screenplay by Rex.

 

Rex has written and directed two feature films, written many screenplays and TV pilots, written two novels, and now a hit play.  He is currently in Italy writing a major motion picture for the De Angelis Group.  He resides in La Jolla, CA.

 

His archive now resides at the Geisel Library's Special Collections on the campus of UCSD, Rex's alma mater.

This publication from well-known motoring artist Tony Gardiner is written for those who would like to start drawing or improve their skills. It details the basic essentials of light, reflections and scale, and demonstrates the way a car’s perspective in a three-quarter front view recedes slightly towards the rear. He also discusses specialized topics including suspension angles, grilles, lamps, and choosing ink, pencil or paint. I admired the renditions of the rally BMC Mini, and the multiple views of the D50 Lancia/Ferrari may inspire you to pull out pencil and paper for some sketching of your own.

About the Author
Tony Gardiner studied Graphic Design and Illustration at the West Sussex College of Art & Crafts in Worthing, during the late 1950’s. It was during this period his love of the motor car came to the fore, spurred on by the famous victory of the Ecurie Ecosse team of Jaguar D Types winning at Le Mans in 1957. This became clear when his progress report for 1957/58, stated “has a weakness for converting all his compositions into motoring or other mechanical illustrations, this must be curbed”. On leaving college he worked as an illustrator in the aviation industry, then to freelancing for various car magazines and then into the auto industry. Now specializing in illustrations in motoring publications and for private commissions for the likes of Rover Japan, Vauxhall, Motorsport, Pegueot, plus drivers such as Sir Stirling Moss and Derek Bell. Tony Gardiner’s work has graced the covers and pages of many motoring books and magazines. He is also an author in his own right, having published ‘Motor Racing at Goodwood in the Sixties’, ‘The Brighton National Speed Trials’ and ‘RAC Rally Action’, all of which are personal recollections of the famous motoring events.
