About the Author

Robert Sedgewick is the William O. Baker professor of computer science at Princeton University. He has held visiting research positions at several advanced research laboratories and serves on the Adobe Systems board. He is also the coauthor (with Kevin Wayne) of Introduction to Programming in Java and Algorithms, Fourth Edition (both from Addison-Wesley).

 

Kevin Wayne is the Phillip Y. Goldman senior lecturer in computer science at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1998. He is an ACM Distinguished Educator and holds a Ph.D. in operations research and industrial engineering

from Cornell University.

 

Robert Dondero is a lecturer in computer science at Princeton University. He has taught there since 2001, earning eight excellence in engineering education awards, and a lifetime achievement award for excellence in teaching. He holds

a Ph.D. in information science and technology from Drexel University.

The most comprehensive style guide I have ever seen, or could even imagine. It is almost overkill. It will make you doubt your writing ability. I can't think of anything it doesn't cover. Makes the MLA Handbook seem like one of the Little Golden Books. When I got over being astonished and intimidated, I found myself reading whole sections because it is so interesting.

It's a tool for the writing/editing craft and it's the most comprehensive one available.You can't consider yourself a pro without knowing much of its contents either by poring over the volume or having the lessons drummed into your head by a senior editor who absorbed the contents by reading it or having it or repackaged versions (newspaper/magazine style guides) slammed on his/her head for straying from the standard.Back in the gruesome days of linotype, the squiggles, pointers, loops and slashes provided shorthand instruction to typesetters and galley men who set lead columns on pages.None of that is needed now but communication among editors, proofreaders and the writer remains all important and so are the standards that help eliminate readers' confusion.In an era when self-published writers go to print without a traditional editor and a few small publishing houses are not staffed by fully seasoned editors, The Chicago Manual Of Style is irreplaceable as a reference tool.

I'm not an editor, but decided I'd take the time and work through it. Mind you, she had already paid someone to edit the manuscript. Needless to say, my friend was some livid ... at the editor. I've proofread Braille for many, many years and know a mess when I see it. My friend claimed that her editor knew "The Chicago Manual of Style" from cover to cover. Not very likely. I decided to purchase this reference to point out exactly where her editor had gone wrong.This is an astounding reference that I found not only speaks to standard print media, but also to production and digital technology. With so many people moving to this format, it's critical that standards are set and followed. The demise of the book as we've come to know it isn't imminent, but why settle for mediocrity in the digital publishing world? I'm not an editor, not will I ever be one. If I need one, I'll know who not to hire from experience. Everyone who works in the world of words, or simply is wowed by them, should invest in this essential reference. If you have a choice of a single reference, this should be one you invest in.

Purchased for my masters level courses. For my Bachelors degree I remember everything being in MLA and the occasional APA format. I had no idea how to work out the Chicago, and the web sites I had found apparently didn't cover everything because I kept having to go back to my professor for help with my citations. I bought this book and while I expected the size, I did not expect the thin pages. I got more than I probably needed in this book, but I've only made trips to my professor to verify my citations are correct and so far so good.
